Steel essentially describes a whole family of metal alloys, with hundreds of application-specific grades, but most people are only aware of two main types of steel, carbon steel and stainless steel.
The difference between stainless steel plate and carbon steel material
Both carbon steel and stainless steel contain similar basic components. The main difference between them is the alloy content. The alloy content of carbon steel is less than 10.5%, while the stainless steel must contain more than 10.5% of chromium. The essential difference is that carbon steel and stainless steel have unique physical properties.
The basic elements of steel are iron and carbon. Generally, steel with higher carbon content is hard and brittle, while steel with lower carbon content has better ductility and toughness.
Of course, this is very simple and can be achieved by adding alloying elements such as chromium, molybdenum, nickel, manganese or silicon to increase corrosion resistance or achieve a better balance between strength and toughness.
Carbon steel is composed of iron with 0.12-2.00% carbon. A broader definition includes alloyed stainless steel sheets, which can also contain alloying contents of up to 10.5%. Even within the carbon content range of less than two percent, there are huge differences in physical properties, especially hardness.
When people discuss carbon steel, they generally refer to high carbon steels used in the production of knives and tools. High carbon steels are very hard, which makes them resist wear and hold shape well. They can withstand a lot of force before deforming. But their drawback is that hard metals are also brittle: high carbon steels are more prone to cracking than bending when placed under extreme tensile stress.
Low carbon steels are more common with higher carbons for the following reasons. First, they can reduce production costs, second, they are also more ductile, and third, they are easier to use and manufacture. Mild steel tends to deform under stress rather than fracture, and ductility makes it easy to machine and weld. They are often used in automotive body panels, bolts, fixtures, seamless tubes and steel plates.
Stainless steel sheets contain iron, carbon and a chromium content of at least 10.5%. Chromium is the key, which reacts with oxygen to form a passivation layer that protects stainless steel from corrosion. This type of protection allows stainless steel sheets to function in wet environments without rusting. The higher the chromium content, the better the corrosion resistance.
When buying large items such as electrical appliances, please pay attention to the material grade of the stainless steel sheet used. Not all stainless steel sheets perform at the same level.
